The www.maritime-rescue.com domain was established in May 2006 as a domain for use by individuals involved in - 'maritime search & rescue or rescues from water' - to communicate to the world how we do the jobs we do while assisting those in danger.

The initial website went by the name 'Maritime Rescue World' and was a static html site with the content authored and published by the owner of the domain. Although this made it possible to have a presence on the world wide web, it was restrictive because others could not add their own content and it was not what we were ultimately aiming for!

Having successfully run an RNLI station website since 1998 the webmaster wanted a website that would allow others involved in the Maritime Search & Rescue World to be able to add details of their own and their teams experiences.`It would also let them publish articles about many aspects of their training and rescues etc.

The owner of this domain is a serving member on an RNLI offshore Tamar class lifeboat and has been actively involved in Maritime Search & Rescue since 1987 and has held positions as: Shore crew, inshore lifeboat helmsman, offshore crew and is a Tamar lifeboat emergency mechanic and has many qualifications including; powerboat helm, PWC, ATV, IRB, SRC, LRC & DSC radio, sea survival, fire fighting and emergency first aid  certificates to name a few.

He is also employed by the RNLI as an Area Technician in the East Division looking after and maintaining all the lifeguard equipment at 9 beaches (2010) in the Norfolk area. This includes ATVs, RWCs, Patrol Trucks and associated equipment such as trailers, mobile lifeguard units and look-outs. On call during the season to cover breakdowns and to carry out monthly equipment checks and servicing. It is a very rewarding role and enables him to use his years of engineering trade experience, to give something back, to the institution that has provided invaluable training and support over the years.

We would like to encourage others to join the Senior Admin Resource Team or SAR Team of this website to add content articles about the specifics of the jobs they do when on station and aboard their vessels to let members of the public know exactly what is involved when turning out at any time of the day or night to go to the aid of someone in distress.

The advances in website software and the now common 'Content Management Systems' or CMS has made it possible to have a database driven site making the job much easier. We chose Joomla CMS because it is a very easy system to use both in the front and back end of the site. This is free to download software and has excellent community support for extensions to any website.
